First off, I guess Hodad’s is not 100% a hole in the wall as they have two other locations, but they are only found in San Diego, are not franchised, and have the look and feel of an edgy, beachy, hole in the wall. With license plate and sticker covered walls, with a combination of classic diner-bar seating, tables, and family style benches, even if they aren’t the only one they are enough of a hole in the wall for me.

When we first pulled up to Hodad’s there was a line out the door, but our willingness to stare into the sun at their converted window bar seating, we were sat very quickly. Due to the time of day our seating was super bright, but it gave us a perfect view of the entire dinning area and a nice view of the street and people walking by.

Hodad’s burgers are huge, but still super juicy and tasty. I ordered a basic single cheeseburger and it was too big for my little mouth to even attempt to try to bite. My boyfriend took the crazy route and ordered their double bacon cheeseburger. Both burgers come with the full works – onions, tomatoes, lots of pickles, lettuce, and “sauce”.  The patties were very moist. On the bacon burger the bacon came chopped up and wedged between the two patties.

Potato Wedges

When you order you can order just a burger or you can get a basket with the choice of onion rings or fries. we both chose fries, but in reality their fries are more potato wedges. Pretty good, nice texture, but could have used more seasoning.

From reading reviews I learned that besides the burgers a big draw for Hodad’s is their shakes and malts. Normally I don’t order shakes as a drink and honestly up until recently I wasn’t even a big fan of ice cream, but the photos of these did it for me. I ordered their chocolate malt and just as their burgers were it was huge. A tall old school shake cup topped with a large scoop of chocolate ice cream. I’m not a huge fan of ice cream, but this was really good and it even left me sad that their was no way I would be able to finish it.

Chocolate Malt

Hodad’s defiantly did not disappoint. If I had the chance I would probably go back again. Overall it was good food, and a fun place for a quick bite. Plus it’s near by many cool stores and the beach, you can’t go wrong.
