My Experience with The Baker & Butcher

9 May

*Full Disclosure: I have done an event with The Baker & Butcher, but will be as honest as I can

My experience with The Baker & Butcher has been just that, an experience. I work right across the street from their store front and had them bookmarked on my Yelp for weeks to try, but never got around to it, until I booked them to work at this year’s BBB Torch Awards. I figured if they are going to serving guests at an event I was working, I should know what I’m feeding our guests.

For my first go round with The Baker & The Butcher I ordered their Butcher’s Cut Sandwich, which is Beef Au Poivre, roasted shiitake, cognac aioli, and slow cooked onion. I hated it.

I was expecting a hot, at least room temperature, sandwich and this was cold. I felt like it was loaded down with condiments and lacked flavor. My first thought was, “Crap, how do I give them a bad review? I have to work with them!”

The following week I had my first face to face meeting with the owner and was taken aback by how kind he was and the passion in his words when he spoke about his food and what they were producing.  Again, “Crap, how do I give them a bad review? They are nice and passionate about food.” The next week I decided I needed to try them again.

The following week I ordered their Pork Tenderloin Banh Mi, black garlic aioli, pickled root vegetables, and cilantro. Now it is not the same experience as eating a traditional Banh Mi, but the flavors are there and it was quite good. The sandwich left me hungry, so maybe not worth the nearly $8 it cost, but it was a sandwich I could enjoy.

A few weeks later we held our Torch Awards and The Baker & Butcher fed our guests before the actually awards ceremony. During the award ceremony the BBB staff got to chose between enjoying lunch from one of our two caterers. For some strange reason I found myself craving The Baker & Butcher, so that’s who I went with.

They had a Baker’s Cut, along with other sandwich options, but I wanted to give it a second chance, this time knowing what I would be getting. That made all the difference. The sandwich worked perfectly. The condiments worked well with the bread they use and the mushrooms and meat were excellent. Although I began hating their sandwiches, I now find myself craving them and I cannot wait to sink my teeth into some of their backed goods.

Windward Food Trucks

4 Apr

Black Bean Burger

One of the first places I ate at after moving to Oahu was two food trucks, parked on the side of the road, while driving down the Windward coast.

The first truck was Sandy Girl. They had a small, yet healthy and flavorful menu. I ordered their grilled cheese sandwich with avocado, tomatoes, and sprouts. It was AMAZING. One of the best grilled cheeses I have ever had and wish I could find this truck just to get another one.

My boyfriend ordered their black bean burger. He is never a big fan of meat substitute

meals, but he was so happy about this burger. He said it was flavorful and strangely juicy.

To go with our meal we got a lilikoi (passion fruit) shave ice from Country Shave Ice. It was the best shave ice I have ever had. The ice was light and so soft. The flavor was pure passion fruit juice and one of the most amazing things I have ever tasted.

This was a perfect meal to end a nice day driving down the coast…Now if I could only find them again.

Brie Burger

Brie Burger

One of my best friends and I went here on one of my last days in California before leaving to Utah. It was our last adventure before I took off. We both love the beach and despite having been friends for over 16 years we had never been to the beach together. Luckily for us, both of us absolutely love Corona Del Mar.

Before hitting the sand, we decided to stop for lunch. How could I skip out on a food opportunity. Located right off of PCH, Summer House was the perfect choice. Immediately after walking in, my friend and I were in love. Summer House is absolutely adorable. Food and service is pretty good too.

Fish and Chips

My friend ordered their brie burger and I got their fish and chips. Now I am not a huge fan of brie so I did not try the burger, but my friend said it was amazing and I trust her. The burger was massive, but gorgeous to look at. Normally my friend has a lot of leftovers, but with this burger she finished almost the whole thing.

The fish and chips were excellent, but just slightly under seasoned. The fish was perfectly flaky and not oily at all. Now I am not a fan of shoestring fries, but in comparison to other places, these were pretty good.

If you are ever down in the OC and looking for a bite to eat in Newport, I highly recommend stopping by Summer House.

Warehouse Pizza, but not a Pizza Review

Beef Dip Sandwich

This is a strange review for me as it is for a pizza joint where I did not indulge in one piece of pizza. One of my dad’s friends offered to take me to lunch and I decided that I would follow his lead and eat as he did. Sometimes I don’t like to be a fatty all on my own. He ordered a sandwich, so I did too and I am very happy with that decision.

Salad with Ranch

I ordered their hot beef dip and it came with a salad and simple Lays Potato Chips. For the price the beef dip had a good amount of meet and just the right amount of cheese to bind it. The salad was delicious and fresh with amazing ranch. My only complaint would be the au jus. It needed salt and lots of it, but that’s not a big enough issue to ruin my meal.

What I also really loved about Warehouse Pizza was the location. It felt laid back and easy going, yet fun. At the same time it is a large enough space that all sorts of different groups of people could have a good time there without irritating the others, at least that’s how I felt. There is a big indoor and outdoor dining area. Service was also very polite.

Half Turkey Sandwich & Half Cesar Salad

Since I have started working in Anaheim I have not given myself much of an opportunity to try the local spots, but I’m slowly breaking myself out of my San Gabriel Valley bubble and beginning to try more and more of what Disneyland’s home (and the surrounding area) has to offer.

Gypsy Den is one of the first places I have had the opportunity to try, and it was no disappointment. The other members of my lunch party ordered their radish, dill and fennel salad and a caprese sandwich with chips. I had half a roasted turkey sandwich and Cesar salad.

Caprese Sandwich

Although I am not a huge sandwich fan, I normally don’t find much to say about them, the Gypsy Den’s roasted turkey sandwich was quite satisfying, but besides that their Cesar salad was to die for. Best Cesar salad I have ever had and I can’t wait to go back for another. The lettuce was super fresh, the salad was perfectly dressed, and it had amazing flavor.

Radish, Dill and Fennel Salad

Besides the fresh and refreshing food, Gypsy Den has amazing charm! Large wood benches outdoors allow a nice place to people watch and enjoy a meal, while insides tables and chairs of all different sizes, a wall of books, and deep colors make you feel right at home.

With all the options Anaheim’s Center Street has to offer, the Gypsy Den is definitely a top contender.

BLT with Avocado

From what I have heard and read, Rialto Cafe is more known for their breakfast than anything else, but they have an amazing lunch and sandwich menu. I haven’t yet had an opportunity to try their breakfast, but after a very pleasant lunch there with a girlfriend of mine I plan to go back soon.

Turkey, Swiss, and Avocado Plate

Rialto Cafe is a little cafe in Downtown Fullerton, with a cute little dinning area inside as well as several shaded tables outside, great for a lunch with your four legged friend. My friend and I sat outside and enjoyed people watching as we ate our meal.

BLT with Avocado

My friend ordered a BLT with avocado and I had their turkey, Swiss and avocado sandwich. Their sandwiches are served with your choice of chips, a variety of salads, or fruit. I had chips, my friend had their tomato and cucumber salad. The sandwiches are served on lightly toasted wheat bread, and although I am not a fan of crunchy bread everything about this sandwich was perfect. The toast to the bread did not make it overwhelming crunchy, but offered just enough stability to hold the sandwich together. My sandwich had just the right mount of turkey, cheese, and avocado. I didn’t try the BLT, but my friend could not stop raving about how much bacon there was and how perfectly it was cooked, not too greasy, not too crunchy.

My Go To Food Truck at CSUF

15 May

Location: Humanities Plaza at CSUF

Food Truck Based out of Costa Mesa, CA

Barcelona OntheGo has been my go to lunch at California State University, Fullerton. In honor of my graduation this coming Saturday I decided it was time to honor what has been my favorite food truck these last two years, even though I have only tried one of their food dishes.

Whenever Barcelona OntheGo happens to be in the humanities plaza on campus it is difficult for me to resist the urge to order my favorite grilled chicken sandwich. The grilled chicken sandwich is comprised of a marinated chicken breast, red bell pepper aioli, and mixed greens served on a warm, yummy artisanal bread. The sandwich comes with crispy hot fries coated perfectly with sea salt. The combination is incredible. The sandwich is juicy, flavorful, and super filling.

Beyond the sandwich I have not tried any of their other dishes, but they all look amazing and smell wonderful. Someday I will track this truck down and try to resist my chicken sandwich in order to try their steak fries or tacos. I have tried a few of their drinks. I do not remember their names one was a fruity virgin mojito and another I believe was a hibiscus lemonade. Both were very refreshing.

What really makes this food truck stand out, besides the phenomenal food, is their service. Whomever happens to be working the truck always greets me with a smile and is always very friendly and personable. As a busy college student grabbing a bite to eat between classes I can also appreciate their speedy service. Even if there is a big line the food is always pumped out super quick. I have never waited more than 10 minutes for my food and that was only once when about 8 people were ahead of me.

If you ever happen to be in the vicinity of a Barcelona OntheGo truck, I highly recommend stopping by. You will not be disappointed.
