Seven Brothers burgers will be my burger lifeline on this island the next three years, even if I do have to drive almost an hour to get to it.

I have eaten my way through a good chunk of burgers here, as you will soon see, and most of them are a pretty big disappointments. There have been a few notable places such as Teddy’s, which has become a regular spot for me, The Counter and The Honolulu Burger Co, but Seven Brother’s satisfies that burger hole left in my heart by all the wonderful California greasy spoons.

Now their burgers are much more elaborate than my usual thousand island dressing, cheese and lettuce burgers which long for, but they have that flavorful, handmade taste, where each element compliments each other that I have been longing for. Doesn’t hurt that this is one of the only places I have found on this island that uses thousand island dressing

Shem Burger

My go to burger is there Shem Burger. It is guacamole with diced tomatoes,  lemon juice, two strips of bacon, and  American cheese, plus thousand island dressing. It is a messy wonderful experience and my mouth has begun watering just thinking about it.

Now for a throwback to my Utah days. Their burgers don’t come with fries, but more of a soggy potato wedge type thing. Now don’t get turned off by my use of the word soggy, they are amazing, well seasoned, a little crunch around the edges, but in no way the type of crunch you’d expect with traditional fries or wedges. They reminded me a lot of the fries I grew to love in Utah. To top off the Utah flashback, they are served with delicious fry sauce!

If you are ever in Oahu, traveling along North Shore make sure you stop by Seven Brothers.

Moving Sale and Tasty Choice

2 Apr

So I’m in the middle of packing up and moving so I apologize for the delay in posts. However, this big adventure gave me an opportunity to treat my nephew, niece and their friends to some awesome burgers at Tasty Choice as a reward for helping out with a moving sale.

No More Jim’s Burgers

28 Oct

I have talked about Jim’s Burgers multiple times, from their burgers to their breakfast. Since I first tried them they have been a go to burger place for me. Never my top choice, but always good and reliable. Sadly now though I have to retract my recommendation and won’t be going there again. When I really like a place I am usually pretty understanding about off days and a messed up order here and there, but Jim’s Burgers had too many shots.

The last four times I went to Jim’s they messed up. Once was for breakfast where they cooked my eggs wrong, I ordered over easy and they gave me scrambled, and I ordered a combo with sausage and when I got home there was nothing. The last three times were all burger mistakes. I am a very simple burger person, I order mine plain with just dressing and lettuce. The last three times at Jim’s I have gotten onions. I could over look that once or even every once in awhile, but really three times in a row? What really got me was this last time I actually saw them put onions than read the slip, realize the mistake and scrap off the onions with their hand, instead of getting a new bun. Lastly, the very last time I was there they served me hard burnt fries. Huge disappointment.

Since all this has happened I have stopped going there and moved my business up the street to Tasty Choice.

In ‘N’ Out? I Think Not

**Drive thru is SLOW**

I have wanted to try this place since I first found out it existed. I stumbled across it on Yelp! and shortly thereafter realized I had driven past it multiple times. The idea of imitating the great In’N’Out, and than taking it a step further peaked my curiosity. After months of anticipation, Big D’s Enter Out Burger did not disappoint.

My boyfriend and I ordered our regular In’N’Out order so we could properly analyze their concept and than topped it off with an order of their chili cheese fries. Everything was delicious!

Double D

When the order arrived you honestly could not tell the difference between an In’N’Out order and Big D’s. Box, wrapped burgers, baskets of fries with a napkin laid over the top, and a single salt packet placed atop each order. If the cups would have been adorned with the classic read and white palm trees I personally believe it would have been difficult to tell the difference.

Single Cheeseburger

I ordered a single and my boyfriend got Big D’s version of a double double or as they name it double D burger. Lots of cheese, thin juicy patty, shredded lettuce, and their sauce. It tasted exactly like In’N’Out, maybe even a little better. Their fries were thin and crispy, no complaint there. And than there was the chili cheese fires. Honestly the color almost scared me away. They did not look very appealing, but looks were deceiving. The chili had a really nice flavor and they definitely do not skimp. I recommend you give them a try.

Chili Cheese Fries

If you are ever in the El Monte area I highly recommend you swing by Big D’s, especially if you are an In’N’Out fan. They offer all the classic In’N’Out items, burgers and even animal style fries, along with much more, fish and chips, chicken, and even fish if I remember correctly.

Sweetwater Cafe is Adorable

Garlic Cheese Bread

So there is this cool little national park, that I had never heard of and I do not think many people have, called Vasquez Rocks. This park has a very interesting history with its long distance neighbor Hollywood. The park consists of really impressive rock formations and has been featured in many films and TV shows over the years. Recently my boyfriend took me hiking there and after a long day of climbing around on the rocks we were starving. That is how we found Sweetwater Cafe.

Big A** Burger

We began with an appetizer. We ordered their garlic cheese bread which, although I loved this little cafe, the bread was a disappointment. It was served hot and it was not bad, but it was not what I expected. The cheese was Parmesan rather than the mozzarella I was expecting. And overall it just left me unsatisfied and wanting something more.

My boyfriend ordered something on their menu called the “Big A** Burger” and that thing is a big ass juicy burger. This burger is a giant patty stuffed with cheddar cheese, mushrooms, and onions, and it was absolutely amazing. One of the best burgers I have ever tried. Juicy, hot, and full of flavor.

Fish & Chips

Although I was torn between many things on the menu I settled for one of my usual dishes, a fish and chips plate. The fish appeared a little oily, but did not taste it. They were served piping hot, and were not over battered. The fish was flavorful and came in nice size portions.  I am not a fan of coleslaw so I have no judgement for that and sadly the tartar sauce lacked a little in flavor, but not enough to mess up the meal.

Interior Design…So Fun

The french fries here were ok, keep the salt on hand, but I loved their ranch and I am a huge ranch fanatic. The drinks here are served in mason jars and other mixed matched glasses, that just added to this little places charm.

From the moment we pulled up to Sweetwater Cafe I fell in love. My family comes from a small, tiny town in Utah, and I have enjoyed meals at multiple family cafes and little restaurants. This place completly reminded me like something I could find out there and I would have never expected to find something like this so close to L.A..
