Taco Kabana

Taco Kabana

1121 Union Mall

Honolulu, HI 96813

Hours: Mon-Fri 6am-9pm / Closed Sat & Sun

Taco Kabana is a cute little taco shack located right outside my office building. Every day at lunch there is a line out the door of people waiting to get a piece of their selective menu.

Taco Kabana serves up tacos, burritos, and quesadillas with your choice of meat, steak or chicken. No rice. No beans. No fuss. Good sauce.

Now I have only had their steak tacos and a steak burrito and I was more than happy with both.  Their tacos a little reminders of the great LA street tacos I’m used to, just less greasy. The meat is tender, they don’t overdo the cilantro or onion, and the hot sauce is flavorful not just hot. The burrito was amazing, packed with meat, veggies, and hot sauce. I ordered this on my way home, after a long day at the office and I devoured the thing before I made it in the front door.

To top it off, everyone I’ve encountered at Taco Kabana is happy, friendly, and welcoming.

My Delight Cupcakery

My Delight Cupcakery

Food truck serving LA, OC, and San Bernardino County

**Brick and mortar location in Ontario**

Left -Red Velvet Right – Strawberry Shortcake

My Delight Cupcakery is another food truck I had been following for awhile, but this time, rather than discovering them on my usual Yelp, they were an Instagram discovery. I thought their cupcakes were beautiful and their flavors sounded unique and delicious. I was so excited to try them.

I was lucky that only a few months after I began following them, that they were parked just a few blocks from where I happened to be staying in West Covina. As soon as I saw the location go up I knew I had to be there. I ordered their strawberry shortcake cupcake as my “fun” flavor and red velvet for my traditional. Both were major disappointed. It’s been awhile since a cupcake has disappointed me this much.

The strawberry shortcake cake was dry and dense. Their “fresh” strawberry filling was super sweet and mushy. The frosting just tasted strange. The red velvet cupcake was much better at first bite and then went just as wrong. The cake was moist to a very unpleasant point and their cream cheese frosting was too cheesy.

As pretty as their cupcakes look and as good as they sound, I don’t think I’ll be back.

Sushi Burritos!!

Jogasaki Truck

Los Angeles based truck

Golden State Roll

I don’t remember how I came across the Sushi Burrito Truck, but I have been following them for longer months, stocking their schedule, just waiting for my chance to give them a shot. Finally one day, on my way home from the convention center, rolling down Brea Canyon into Rowland Heights, there it was. There was my Sushi Burrito, parked in front of Stater Bro’s on Colima. My dreams had come true. I rushed to my sister’s, grabbed my niece, the only little one I have brave enough to give sushi a shot, and we headed down the Jogasaki, the food truck of my dreams.

Spider Burrito and Golden State Roll

We ordered their monthly special, their spider burrito. A spider roll in a burrito form – deep fried soft shell crab, crab meat, avocado, cucumber, radish sprout, and yamagobo. We also tried their Golden State Roll. It’s a deep-fried California Roll served with eel sauce.

We absolutely loved both and finished everything down to the last grain of rice. The ingredients were fresh and even in their supersized portions, the flavors were just as balanced as if you were eating a normal roll. Yes, I must admit they are a little pricy for my taste, but when thinking about what you pay for sushi the price makes sense for the supersized portions. I can’t afford to eat there regularly, but I will be back.

I don’t spend much time in this area at all, but when my boyfriend had some things to do in the area I wanted to take advantage and try some new food. I did a quick Yelp search for our go to safety meal, burgers, and went to the closest that came up. That lead us to The Standing Room.

Pulling up we were a little confused, until we realized that the burger place was actually in the liquor store and then I got excited; a true unique eats location. After we went in I was even more surprised. Not only is it a burger place in the back of a liquor store, it is a gourmet burger place in the back of a liquor store. Fancy ingredients, complex flavor combos and of course kind of steep prices, not saying the food not worth it, just be warned this isn’t a quick stop cheap eats burger joint.

Once again this a place my boyfriend and I could not agree upon, kind of like our G Burger experience. I love the food, he was less than impressed. He ordered their Cash Burger, which is their version of a Western Bacon Burger, complete with onion ring and BBQ sauce. I did not try it, but he said the flavor was disappointing and the meat was poor quality for the price. I ordered their Classic Burger, which is just that, classic meat, cheese, and thousand island dressing. I loved my burger, thought it was juicy, flavorful and you could really taste the quality of the meat. We shared an order of sweet potato fries, which immediately reminded me of my favorite lunch at CSUF, so they were a hit with me. Crunchy yet fluffy, they were perfect.

Now since The Standing Room is in the back of a liquor store they do not supply you with the traditional eating area, but there is a nice area, few tables and counter with bar stools, out in the parking lot. Since this place is just a few blocks from the beach it is really a nice place to eat, not too hot and a nice ocean breeze on a good day.

The Slummin Gourmet

The Slummin’ Gourmet

Food Truck serving LA and OC

Kobe Hot Dog and Garlic Manchego Fries

I have been tracking this truck for years now. I first stumbled upon them while searching for my fair worthy corn dog, which lead me to Joe’s (but that is another post –> click here). I was drawn in by the promise of a lobster corn dog and stuck around for the thought of trying a scallop slider. I needed to try this truck and I finally got my chance awhile back when they were at the Anaheim Convention Center. IMG_20150212_111547824Slummin

Although I was tracking them for their lobster corn dog, just my luck they weren’t serving them that day. So I was forced to try something else. I ordered their kobe hotdog – kobe beef hotdog, wasabi mayo, teriyaki, nori, bonito, diced tomatoes, daikon sprouts. Now this is going to sound strange, but I did not like the hot dog, something just didn’t taste that appealing to me, but I can’t wait to go back to try more. The hotdog wasn’t bad, just not for me. I can’t quite figure out what the problem was, but I was amazed by the quality of the ingredients, the complexity of flavors, and the careful preparation. With my hot dog I got their garlic manchego fries, which were AMAZING. Hot crunchy and an awesome mix of flavor.
