His & Her Size Pho

Lemongrass was one of the first restaurants my fiancé took me to when I arrived here. I have tried their grilled pork, pad Thai, rare steak pho, house special wings, and spring rolls.

Rare Steak Pho

Their grilled pork and noodles was the first dish I had here. The pork was tender and flavorful and the portion size was good.

My fiancé’s go to dish is their pad Thai, but I’m not sure if that’s for the flavor or the varying  degrees of heat they offer. I personally find the pad Thai unmemorable, but my fiancé likes making it unbearably hot.

Pad Thai

Our go to order at Lemongrass is pho and spring rolls, like with most places. The pho is ok, most times, inconsistent flavor has varied almost every time we go, but the best thing about Lemongrass pho is their sizes. Unlike most pho places where their small, medium and large are all about the same size, at Lemongrass their small is little, and their large is huge. I always struggle to finish my pho, so their small is perfect, while my fiancé, at most places is left hungry, he loves their large.

Their spring rolls are ok, a slightly stronger taste than I prefer.

Spring Rolls

Their house special wings are supposed to be their hot chicken wings. They were different and juicy, but not necessarily flavorful or hot.

An always redeeming quality for Lemongrass is their exceptional service. Their wit staff is always helpful, kind, and welcoming. Service is pretty quick and normally very attentive.

I wanted to like OB Noodle House so bad, but I just can’t. With it’s cool interior, oddly Thai inspired, chalkboard full of unique beers, and super friendly service, I had high hopes. Hopes that were crushed and became worse over time.

Rare Steak Pho

OB Noodle House is another one of my Triple D recommendations, so I had really high expectations. Everything seemed perfect until the food arrived. I have to admit I was impressed with the ample amount of meat, but that ultimately became a downfall. The broth was clearly greasy. Everything lacked flavor and was in no way impressive. At first my reaction was that this pho was just bland, but within 5 minutes of leaving the place I began to feel heavy, similar to the feeling of a day of fast food, and I could not get rid of the greasy feel in my mouth.

Greasy Pho Broth

We only tried their rare steak pho, so I can’t say much about any of their other dishes. The seating is not very private so I was able to get a good look at my neighboring patron’s plates. They looked good, but I am hesitant to give them another try, pho has never left me feeling heavy. Many reviews state the wait as a main complaint, but I really did not find it that bad. Service was awesome and they have countless numbers of unique beers, so I could recommend giving them a shot if you are a beer fan, but skip them if you are looking for good pho.

Rare Steak Pho

I feel like lately I have been complaining about service a lot lately, but this place has been one of the worse, as far as frustration goes. When we arrived at Golden Noodle and Grill Vietnamese Restaurant they took our order fairly quick, but it was the last thing they did quick the entire night. They also were not the most talkative.

My boyfriend ordered their rare steak pho and I got their pork vermicelli with an egg roll. They asked no questions as we ordered or really said anything. Asked if we were ready to order, stood silent as we ordered and then simply walked away when we were done talking. They brought us our food, in an ok amount of time, but again did not say a word.

Pork Vermicelli with an Egg Roll

Now at this point I would have liked to begin eating, but I am not the greatest at eating with chopsticks. I am trying to learn, but haven’t really gotten it down yet. Most places I have gone to ask if we would like a fork or at least have been very accommodating if I ask. Not here. After they gave us our food they began to literally avoid us, no matter what I did to get their attention they would look away or pretend not to see me. I tried the chopsticks, but it wasn’t going well and I was starving. Finally I got up and went to the register. The man there also ignored me. I stood there, in front of his face a good two minutes before he even acknowledge me. He wasn’t helping anyone either. After that we never interacted with another person again.

Pho Extras, Thai Tea and Water

As far as the food goes the flavor was decent, but portions were horrible. We were only offered one size pho and the amount of meat on my dish was very depressing. Price was slightly higher than most places I have been going to lately as well. I won’t be back and I don’t recommend trying them either, much better places in the area.

Strawberry Milkshake and Thai Ice Tea

I live in an area with an abundance of pho places along with any other Asian cuisine one may desire. Despite that, Golden Noodle & Grill is the first pho location near me I have tried and I must say I was very satisfied.

Rare Steak Pho

To drink, my boyfriend ordered their Thai tea, as usual, and I ordered their strawberry milkshake. Unlike Pho Ha’s strawberry milkshake I was not in love. It was icy and flavorless with way too much boba. Beyond the drinks though I must say I was satisfied.

Grilled Pork Plate

My boyfriend ordered their rare steak pho. Again I did not try much of it, but according to him the flavor was good, and the meat abundant. He did however have two small complaints – it was a little greasy for him and unlike most pho places Golden Noodle only offers one size bowl.

I ordered their grilled pork plate. Mmmmm it was so delicious. I desperately want to compare it to a teriyaki chicken, but that does not do it justice. The pork is tendered and sweet, yet sour, with a hint of garlic. It is a must try.

Pork Sandwich

We ordered their pork sandwich to share and instantly after tasting it I decided that I would rather come here for a $3.99 sandwich for a quick lunch than pick up a 99 cent McChicken from McDonald’s across the street. The sandwich is a french baguette stuffed with their grilled pork, and a type of mayo slaw consisting of carrots and I believe one other vegetable. It was delicious!

Ribeye Pho

When I was in high school there was a Taco Bell right down the street from the campus. I walked past it everyday on my way home, and usually would grab a bean burrito for the walk. Sometime during my sophomore year, my Taco Bell was turned into a Pho place. Since than I have to admit I have somewhat held a grudge against the many Pho places that have popped up in my neighborhood since than. Also I am not much a “soup” person so once I learned what i actually was I still was not super eager to give it a try.

Thai Tea and Passion Fruit Tea

I may not be a soup person, but my boyfriend is. Recently some of his co-workers took him out for Pho and instantly he was hooked. He told me I had to try it and desperatly began looking for one to take me too. He decided on Ruby’s Kitchen, a fusion place that recently opened across from Mt.SAC and a place he had seen recruiters at the Marines next door eating from quite a bit.

Since Ruby’s classifys themselves as fusion place I was not as intimidated and upon seeing chili fries on their menu I felt better (Beyond their regular menu they have a ever changing special menu.). My boyfriend ordered their ribeye pho, I got their teriyaki pineapple chicken bowl, and we ordered their chicken wings and jalepano poppers for an appetizer.

Jalapeno Poppers

The poppers left me with mixed feelings. I hate cream cheese stuffed poppers, which these were, but the jalepanos were fresh and had a juciy snap to them which lessned my dissatisfaction with the cream cheese. The chicken wings were decent. I am not a fan of chicken wings, but the chicken alone was flavorful, and they were nice, hot, and crispy. My boyfriend really enjoyed the wing sauce.

Pineapple Teriyaki Chicken Bowl

I was forced to try the Pho, which I will admit was not that bad. It had very nice flavor and if I liked soup I may have enjoyed it. It looked really good and I wanted to eat it, but soup has never really been my thing and I really have to be in the mood for it.

My chicken bowl was really good. Rather than slathering my meat in teriyaki sauce like most palces do, Ruby’s cooks pineapple in teriyaki and than tops the chicken with that. You still get that awesome teriyaki flavor, but not so over powering and the pineapple is refeshing. My boyfriend does not even like teriyaki chicken and he liked my bowl.

Chicken Wings

To drink we ordered their thai tea and passion fruit tea. I am not a fan of thai tea, but the passion fruit was delicious. It was refereshing and has peices of fruit in it, very good.

The only downfall to Ruby’s is their service. The servers and lazy and unattentive. Out waitor spilt water across our table and did not even care to wipe it up. The manager (or owner I am assuming) though made up for them. He was very polite and kind. He boxed up our meals for us and cleaned up the mess of his workers. He was very personable.
