Taco Kabana

Taco Kabana

1121 Union Mall

Honolulu, HI 96813

Hours: Mon-Fri 6am-9pm / Closed Sat & Sun

Taco Kabana is a cute little taco shack located right outside my office building. Every day at lunch there is a line out the door of people waiting to get a piece of their selective menu.

Taco Kabana serves up tacos, burritos, and quesadillas with your choice of meat, steak or chicken. No rice. No beans. No fuss. Good sauce.

Now I have only had their steak tacos and a steak burrito and I was more than happy with both.  Their tacos a little reminders of the great LA street tacos I’m used to, just less greasy. The meat is tender, they don’t overdo the cilantro or onion, and the hot sauce is flavorful not just hot. The burrito was amazing, packed with meat, veggies, and hot sauce. I ordered this on my way home, after a long day at the office and I devoured the thing before I made it in the front door.

To top it off, everyone I’ve encountered at Taco Kabana is happy, friendly, and welcoming.

No Need for L&L Anymore

Steak Plate - Brody's Hawaiian BBQ

Steak Plate

Brody’s Hawaiian BBQ, after only two meals there, is easily becoming a contender for one of my favorite places to grab a bite to eat. Every worker I have encountered is more than kind, super helpful, very friendly, and attentive. The portions are huge, the food is delicious, and the prices are amazing.

Chicken Plate - Brody's Hawaiian BBQ

Chicken Plate

Both times I have been there I have ordered their steak plate. The meat is super flavorful, and as big as the portions are, I struggle not to gorge myself on the entire thing. The plate comes with coleslaw, macaroni salad, and rice. Now normally I’m not a fan of any of those items, but I finished it all. Both the coleslaw and macaroni salad are not overly dressed or overly creamy. The coleslaw still has a nice crunch to it. The rice is perfectly cooked and you have the option to upgrade to brown if you’re feeling a little healthy.

My absolute favorite thing about here though is their perfectly flavored, super light and fluffy, shockingly cheap Hawaiian Shaved Ice. $1.50 for a small. The ice is perfect, they don’t over dress it, so it doesn’t become a super syrup sugar slush, and it’s cheap! You can’t beat that. My boyfriend even indulged with me.

If you’re near the West Covina Mall or the West Covina area in general you need to stop here. Even if you aren’t familiar with Hawaiian food or only know places like L&L you need to give them a try. For the Hawaiian cuisine virgin they have a photo wall of all their options and if that’s not enough they are more than willing to talk you through the options.

Kala Truck

Kala Truck

Truck based out of Orange County

Patron Tacos

I have only tried one item from the Kala Truck and it was quite phenomenal and I cannot wait to check them out again. I tried their Patron Tacos – steak marinated in tequila and lime, pico de gallo, guacamole, and queso fresco. When the tacos were handed to me I picked at the meat as I found a good place to eat. The meat alone did not appeal to me at all and I was fearful; luckily the overall taco’s flavors worked perfectly together. Meat and all, I would not change a thing. The tacos had a surprising kick, a nice heat, but the guacamole offered the perfect balance to make the heat enjoyable. The Kala Truck is a must try, especially if the rest of their food is as well balanced as their Patron Tacos.

Pho Olivia

Rare Steak Pho

Before graduating from Cal State Fullerton, my team from the Newport Beach Film Festival and I enjoyed one last meal together at Pho Olivia. It was, what would turn out to be an all night meeting to finish our final business plan and we needed fuel to get us through the night.

Fried Rice and Egg Roll

We had already been working for over 4 hours and we were ready for some dinner. Pho Olivia was close, cheap, and compared to our other options, relatively nutritious. The food was amazing, the service was awesome, and overall it was a nice break from our work.

Our meal consisted of rare steak pho, fried rice, egg rolls, and a variety of drinks. We had thai ice tea, strawberry lemonade, and a lemon soda. Everyone was happy with everything.

Thai Ice Tea

The pho was hot, flavorful, and had lots of meat. The thai ice tea, as I have said before is not my favorite drink, but their’s was nice, not too sweet. The strawberry lemonade was a perfect combination of sweet and sour. Although I didn’t get to try the lemon soda, my team lead described it as delicious.

Strawberry Lemonade

The layout of Pho Olivia is very open, makes for a nice place for large groups to meet up. The service was awesome, they were very attentive and quick. Overall it was a very nice experience and I cannot wait to go back.

OB Noodle House

1 May

2218 Cable St

San Diego, CA92107

Mon – Thurs 12 noon – 11pm / Fri – Sun 11am – 11pmIMG_3823

I wanted to like OB Noodle House so bad, but I just can’t. With it’s cool interior, oddly Thai inspired, chalkboard full of unique beers, and super friendly service, I had high hopes. Hopes that were crushed and became worse over time.

Rare Steak Pho

OB Noodle House is another one of my Triple D recommendations, so I had really high expectations. Everything seemed perfect until the food arrived. I have to admit I was impressed with the ample amount of meat, but that ultimately became a downfall. The broth was clearly greasy. Everything lacked flavor and was in no way impressive. At first my reaction was that this pho was just bland, but within 5 minutes of leaving the place I began to feel heavy, similar to the feeling of a day of fast food, and I could not get rid of the greasy feel in my mouth.

Greasy Pho Broth

We only tried their rare steak pho, so I can’t say much about any of their other dishes. The seating is not very private so I was able to get a good look at my neighboring patron’s plates. They looked good, but I am hesitant to give them another try, pho has never left me feeling heavy. Many reviews state the wait as a main complaint, but I really did not find it that bad. Service was awesome and they have countless numbers of unique beers, so I could recommend giving them a shot if you are a beer fan, but skip them if you are looking for good pho.

More From Pho Ha

20 Jan

Pho Ha was one of the first places I ever tried pho and recently I had the opportunity to go there again with some of my boyfriend’s family and got to experience a few more dishes.

Pad Thai

This time round I decided to try the house special pad Thai. It was really quite yummy, not like any pad Thai I have ever had before. Red pepper flakes gave it a strong kick, at least for me. Despite the heat I still loved it.

Steak Plate

My boyfriend’s cousin’s boyfriend ordered one of their steak dishes. I didn’t try it, but it looked amazing and smelled even better.

Egg Rolls

We ordered some egg rolls to share. Sadly I have to say this is where Pho Ha let me down. Everything else I have ever tried from their has been wonderful, but the egg rolls were dry and flavorless.

Golden Noodle and Grill

7 days a week 10am – 9pm

Strawberry Milkshake and Thai Ice Tea

I live in an area with an abundance of pho places along with any other Asian cuisine one may desire. Despite that, Golden Noodle & Grill is the first pho location near me I have tried and I must say I was very satisfied.

Rare Steak Pho

To drink, my boyfriend ordered their Thai tea, as usual, and I ordered their strawberry milkshake. Unlike Pho Ha’s strawberry milkshake I was not in love. It was icy and flavorless with way too much boba. Beyond the drinks though I must say I was satisfied.

Grilled Pork Plate

My boyfriend ordered their rare steak pho. Again I did not try much of it, but according to him the flavor was good, and the meat abundant. He did however have two small complaints – it was a little greasy for him and unlike most pho places Golden Noodle only offers one size bowl.

I ordered their grilled pork plate. Mmmmm it was so delicious. I desperately want to compare it to a teriyaki chicken, but that does not do it justice. The pork is tendered and sweet, yet sour, with a hint of garlic. It is a must try.

Pork Sandwich

We ordered their pork sandwich to share and instantly after tasting it I decided that I would rather come here for a $3.99 sandwich for a quick lunch than pick up a 99 cent McChicken from McDonald’s across the street. The sandwich is a french baguette stuffed with their grilled pork, and a type of mayo slaw consisting of carrots and I believe one other vegetable. It was delicious!
