His & Her Size Pho

Lemongrass was one of the first restaurants my fiancé took me to when I arrived here. I have tried their grilled pork, pad Thai, rare steak pho, house special wings, and spring rolls.

Rare Steak Pho

Their grilled pork and noodles was the first dish I had here. The pork was tender and flavorful and the portion size was good.

My fiancé’s go to dish is their pad Thai, but I’m not sure if that’s for the flavor or the varying  degrees of heat they offer. I personally find the pad Thai unmemorable, but my fiancé likes making it unbearably hot.

Our go to order at Lemongrass is pho and spring rolls, like with most places. The pho is ok, most times, inconsistent flavor has varied almost every time we go, but the best thing about Lemongrass pho is their sizes. Unlike most pho places where their small, medium and large are all about the same size, at Lemongrass their small is little, and their large is huge. I always struggle to finish my pho, so their small is perfect, while my fiancé, at most places is left hungry, he loves their large.

Their spring rolls are ok, a slightly stronger taste than I prefer.

Their house special wings are supposed to be their hot chicken wings. They were different and juicy, but not necessarily flavorful or hot.

An always redeeming quality for Lemongrass is their exceptional service. Their wit staff is always helpful, kind, and welcoming. Service is pretty quick and normally very attentive.

Organic Strawberry Snow

Over the years living in Rowland Heights I have seen countless people share photos of their ice experiences, but I have never had the courage to try it myself. That is until a few weeks ago when my niece and I decided to be adventurous together. I had a coupon for Baskin Robins, and that is originally where we planned to go, but we ended up leaving after they closed. In desperation for something sweet we decided to give I-Sweet a chance and I am so happy we did.

Banana Snow

We got organic strawberry and banana. Banana was a little much for me, too strong of a banana taste, but the strawberry was amazing, one of the best desserts I have every tried. It was light and airy. It tasted super refreshing. Although I don’t know what the calorie and nutrition of snow is, it tasted very guilt free.

Now I haven’t tried any other snow places so I really have nothing to compare I-Sweet to, but I plan on trying others and will let you all know how I feel. For now however, go to I-Sweet!!

Rare Steak Pho

Before graduating from Cal State Fullerton, my team from the Newport Beach Film Festival and I enjoyed one last meal together at Pho Olivia. It was, what would turn out to be an all night meeting to finish our final business plan and we needed fuel to get us through the night.

Fried Rice and Egg Roll

We had already been working for over 4 hours and we were ready for some dinner. Pho Olivia was close, cheap, and compared to our other options, relatively nutritious. The food was amazing, the service was awesome, and overall it was a nice break from our work.

IMG_4142

Our meal consisted of rare steak pho, fried rice, egg rolls, and a variety of drinks. We had thai ice tea, strawberry lemonade, and a lemon soda. Everyone was happy with everything.

Thai Ice Tea

The pho was hot, flavorful, and had lots of meat. The thai ice tea, as I have said before is not my favorite drink, but their’s was nice, not too sweet. The strawberry lemonade was a perfect combination of sweet and sour. Although I didn’t get to try the lemon soda, my team lead described it as delicious.

Strawberry Lemonade

The layout of Pho Olivia is very open, makes for a nice place for large groups to meet up. The service was awesome, they were very attentive and quick. Overall it was a very nice experience and I cannot wait to go back.

I wanted to like OB Noodle House so bad, but I just can’t. With it’s cool interior, oddly Thai inspired, chalkboard full of unique beers, and super friendly service, I had high hopes. Hopes that were crushed and became worse over time.

IMG_3825

Rare Steak Pho

OB Noodle House is another one of my Triple D recommendations, so I had really high expectations. Everything seemed perfect until the food arrived. I have to admit I was impressed with the ample amount of meat, but that ultimately became a downfall. The broth was clearly greasy. Everything lacked flavor and was in no way impressive. At first my reaction was that this pho was just bland, but within 5 minutes of leaving the place I began to feel heavy, similar to the feeling of a day of fast food, and I could not get rid of the greasy feel in my mouth.

IMG_3826

Greasy Pho Broth

We only tried their rare steak pho, so I can’t say much about any of their other dishes. The seating is not very private so I was able to get a good look at my neighboring patron’s plates. They looked good, but I am hesitant to give them another try, pho has never left me feeling heavy. Many reviews state the wait as a main complaint, but I really did not find it that bad. Service was awesome and they have countless numbers of unique beers, so I could recommend giving them a shot if you are a beer fan, but skip them if you are looking for good pho.

Egg Rolls

I have eaten A LOT of pho in the Rowland Heights/La Puente area, but this is the first time I have eaten pho in the OC. I chose Pho Ha because it was the only pho place open late in the area. The staff was friendly, the place was clean and welcoming.

IMG_3679

Thai Ice Tea

My boyfriend and I ordered their rare steak pho, egg rolls, thai tea, and a strawberry smoothie. Service was very quick for the amount of people that were in restaurant. Despite being friendly when we first walked in throughout the rest of the meal the staff was very distant, and although accommodating did not talk much or check in very frequently. Before I talk about the quality of the food I must say the prices were higher than I am used to.

IMG_3680

Strawberry Smoothie

As I have said before I am not a big fan of Thai tea, but their’s was very nice and the strawberry smoothie was delicious. The egg rolls were a huge disappointment. There was not enough filling for their size and they were not very crunchy. If you do plan to give them a shot I recommend skipping the egg rolls. I got the small bowl and my boyfriend got the large size bowl of pho. The sizes were not that different, but on the up side the small bowl was huge! The pho was slightly bland than other places I have had, but overall not too bad.

Rare Steak Pho

The prices at Pho Ha Brea disappointed me a bit, but I would not be opposed to eating there again, especially if it was a late night pho craving again. Before I can fully decide on here though I feel I need to try other pho in the area. For now though if you are near the Brea mall and find yourself with a late night pho craving give them a shot.

More Ruby’s Kitchen

4 Mar

Recently I had the chance to try some new things at Ruby’s Kitchen and they still continue to impress.

I ordered one of their slush drinks and we tried their fries, spring rolls, and a pork sandwich. All were pretty impressive and a definite recommendation.

My Mystery Drink

I can’t say for sure what drink I ultimately ended up with as I originally ordered one of their smoothies, but they were out of one ingredient so they offered me one of their slush drinks and then when they delivered it the waiter wasn’t sure what the cook had made me. Either way it was delicious, cold and refreshing.

IMG_20140122_152527_612

French Fries

Their fries, although they may have been frozen were hot, crunchy, and had just the right amount of salt. A perfect price makes them the perfect snack.

IMG_20140122_152611_468

Spring Rolls

I am not a fan of spring rolls so I do not have much to say in terms of these. They were well made and all the ingredients were fresh. One thing positive I can say is I was very surprised by their size.

IMG_20140122_153007_139

Pork Sandwich

Their pork sandwich was yummy, just a little too much cilantro for my taste, but that is a problem easily fixed. For under $5 it is an awesome lunch for the students of Mt.SAC right across the street. As a former student there I know the students are always in search of good cheap food.

Rare Steak Pho

I feel like lately I have been complaining about service a lot lately, but this place has been one of the worse, as far as frustration goes. When we arrived at Golden Noodle and Grill Vietnamese Restaurant they took our order fairly quick, but it was the last thing they did quick the entire night. They also were not the most talkative.

My boyfriend ordered their rare steak pho and I got their pork vermicelli with an egg roll. They asked no questions as we ordered or really said anything. Asked if we were ready to order, stood silent as we ordered and then simply walked away when we were done talking. They brought us our food, in an ok amount of time, but again did not say a word.

IMG_3414

Pork Vermicelli with an Egg Roll

Now at this point I would have liked to begin eating, but I am not the greatest at eating with chopsticks. I am trying to learn, but haven’t really gotten it down yet. Most places I have gone to ask if we would like a fork or at least have been very accommodating if I ask. Not here. After they gave us our food they began to literally avoid us, no matter what I did to get their attention they would look away or pretend not to see me. I tried the chopsticks, but it wasn’t going well and I was starving. Finally I got up and went to the register. The man there also ignored me. I stood there, in front of his face a good two minutes before he even acknowledge me. He wasn’t helping anyone either. After that we never interacted with another person again.

IMG_3410

Pho Extras, Thai Tea and Water

As far as the food goes the flavor was decent, but portions were horrible. We were only offered one size pho and the amount of meat on my dish was very depressing. Price was slightly higher than most places I have been going to lately as well. I won’t be back and I don’t recommend trying them either, much better places in the area.
